Atelier F was founded in the summer of 2015 in New York City. The artist, Xiaoyun Fan (Michele) was raised in China and educated in the U.S. She studied photography at Syracuse University and art history at Christie’s Education. Before she started her ceramics career, she worked at major art institutions such as Christie’s auction house and Cai Guo-Qiang studio. Xiaoyun is a self-taught potter who first learned ceramics at her local pottery studio. Her passion in clay took her to further study with Eric Landon at Tortus studio in Copenhagen and Lisa Chicoyne at Greenwich House Pottery in New York City.
Xiaoyun is deeply influenced by the graceful and simple, yet sophisticated, aesthetic from the Song Dynasty of China. Her works examine the ability to see colors and forms through craftsmanship. The earthiness and flexibility of clay inspires her relentless exploration in the nature of the material.
Atelier F is a young studio with lots of dreams and passion. “F” stands for fire, one of the key elements to make ceramics. It also means the fun in making things happen.
